2002 Mazda Miata dies when hot / stalls on the highway /engine quits / shuts off

Recently, while driving at 60mph, my wife's little Miata shut off completely at the hottest part of the day on a hot asphalt
road surrounded by hot cars 4 lanes wide. Scary stuff.

Cranks fine but would not restart. at all.
After a while (and phone calls to me) the little car restarted and she drove it off the Interstate into a restaurant parking lot.

Much later in the evening (30deg cooler), when we picked it up, it started fine and ran home 20 miles!

WHAT GIVES?

Plenty of gas. She did not notice whether the tach was moving or whether the check light went out while cranking (indicates crank pulses received)

After much study, I changed out the Crank Angle Sensor at the front of the engine Beck/Arnley 180-0442.

The price through Amazon was $45 which was a bit better than the $90 from Oreilly Auto's.

The change out was simple. Remove the plastic cover from the bottom of the car that protects the engine. (4 10mm bolts, 3 screws)
10mm bolt removed the sensor.(right of the harmonic balancer looking from the front.)

Un-threaded wire to the top of the engine and unplugged 3 pin plug.

Reversed the procedure - Setting the gap to about 1mm (0.5-1.5) Ran the connector up to the plug.

IMPORTANT NOTES - HARD TO FIND ANYWHERE.

The 2002 Mazda Miata WILL NOT RUN WITH NO CRANK ANGLE POSITION SENSOR SIGNAL. I tried it.

You would think this would be easy to find, huh? Nope. Now different years may be different.
Mazda have renamed the CAM Sensor and the CRANK angle several times just to confuse us all.

Has it fixed it? No idea yet. Not been hot enough - Stay tuned!
