A Nissan Sentra with a bad crankshaft position sensor but a really cool
You are driving along and suddenly the engine jolts then starts running rough. The tach is dead! No rpm! But you are still going, sort of. The ominous CES Service Check Engine light comes on! You feel your wallet heating up too......
Then the next day, it works, then warms up and fails again - what is going on?
What now? Take it to a dealership and be charged hundreds to repair? You get the code read at your local parts dealer - P0335 / PO335 Crankshaft Position Sensor - rats! You start "Googling" - everyone says it's easy to change, but no one will show you a picture!
There is a recall concerning these sensors - Nissan was supposed to reflash (re-program the cars ecm / computer ) and replace the ecm and/or sensor if bad.
They said they had done ours already - yeah right. The part was only about $20-$40 so here's hoping all will go well.
HOW TO CHANGE THE CRANKSHAFT POSITION SENSOR ON A NISSAN SENTRA and still keep your arm.
1) Jack her up - chock for safety with jack stands etc. Expose your knees and climb on under. DO NOT DO THIS WHILE THE ENGINE IS HOT!
YOU WILL BURN YOURSELF! Roger did.
Disclaimer: These are NOT my knees.
Lay under passenger side close to the driveshaft and look left towards middle of the back of the engine.
The crankshaft position sensor faces REARWARD and is in the corner where the engine meets the transmission.
The only way to reach it is to stick you whole right ARM in between the driveshaft, the exhaust and the engine.
(While there is lots of room, the position the sensor is at is diabolical!) In the picture, it looks close, it isn't! It is about a foot
or more to the left of the opening where you stick you arm. A real fun thing to do.
Unclip the connector.
Remove the 10mm bolt (it is NOT a 12mm bolt - that is the CAMSHAFT POSITION Sensor)
Getting the thing out even once the bolt is removed is quite a challenge, we used a long flat
headed screwdriver for one side and a shorter one to pry against the trannie. We worked it back and forth until it finally popped out.
The O ring seems to be the reason it is a pain to remove.
Put a little soap on the new sensor's O ring - stick you whole arm back through the hole and reverse the process.
Careful the bolt is tightened into aluminium - do not strip.
Put the connector back on.
Remove whole arm from engine.
Clear codes with code reader - We used an ACTRON CP9135. If you don't have one, get the auto parts folks to do it.
They made a little money from you .....
Finally .... Clean knees
Here is the old sensor and the new - they look different! The jury is still out on this one.
Will let you know if it fixes it long term - the tach came right up though.
